01

Processing: prepare the measurements for interpretation

The processing workflow depends on the sensor system, survey configuration and intended result. Position information, signal quality and relevant corrections must be considered before the data are interpreted.

02

Modelling and inversion: investigate a subsurface explanation

Inversion seeks a model whose calculated response is consistent with the measurements. For electromagnetic investigations, this can be used to estimate the distribution of subsurface electrical properties. A model is an interpretation of the available evidence. Its detail and reliability depend on the data, the assumptions used and the sensitivity of the survey to the target.

03

Interpretation: connect the result with the project question

Geological information, existing investigations and site records help place the geophysical response in context. The aim is to understand what the data support, what remains uncertain and where further investigation may be useful.

04

Agree the deliverables before the survey

The proposal should identify the required data, maps or models and the level of interpretation. It should also establish how the results will be delivered for use by your project team.

Item to agreeQuestions to resolve
Data and mapsWhich processed measurements and mapped results are required?
ModelsIs modelling appropriate, and which model outputs are needed?
InterpretationWhich geological or object-related questions should be addressed?
DocumentationHow will survey coverage, assumptions and limitations be described?
Data exchangeWhich coordinate reference system and file formats does your team require?
05

Plan the output around its intended use

Tell us how you intend to use the results, whether for further exploration, hydrogeological assessment or the investigation of buried infrastructure and objects.
